How does your youth trophy case compare to your son’s or daughter’s ?
How does yours??
Mine is not an acurate portrayal.
I made the varsity teams of a then 4A (top bracket back then) as a Soph
I lived and breathed football, baseball and basketball.
I was blessed by God to have natural athletic ability.
I have several trophies but this was back when normally only 1st place received individual trophies.
I have lots of no hitter game ##### I pitched, three home runs in one game , made all star teams one game had 3 interceptions against our rival in football etc etc etc
Although my children have ability they have no desire to play sports preferring to indulge more in the arts etc
Therefore, I do not push my vicariousness upon them.
None of my kids have ever been on a sports team but I have seen lots of kids rooms that would probably make Pistol Pete jealous.
These days its all about everyone is a winner and what kind of snack are we having after the game. Yaddah yaddah yaddah.
My children participated in PARDS (Parks and Recreation Denham Springs) Baseball and on Denham Springs High School Swim Team.
The Baseball program at PARDS gave trophies (and small trophies at that) only to the first place teams for each age group. My oldest son has 4 or 5 of those, my youngest son has 1. If you made the All Star team you got to keep the cap and jersey. I saw parents of other teams buy trophies for their teams, but the kids seemed to be aware that they didn’t win those. I don’t know how the soccer leagues (Sissy Sport!) handled their awards.
As far as the high school athletics, my youngest son lettered 3 years, and I think aside from winning LHSAA medals, ribbons, etc. from individual swim meets, he received certificates for making it to the State swim meets. He may have received a couple of participation awards for invitational events. His most prized swimming award is a one mile swim patch earned at Camp Avondale (BSA) when he was 10.
I can honestly say that those two guys earned what they received. Denham Springs has really been a great place to raise kids. I hate to see the inflow from Baton Rouge continuing.
My kids played and I coached(a little) PARDS baseball. I was never really impressed by it, the quality of play was never what I experienced playing American Legion Baseball in Baton Rouge. Of course American Legion BB is no longer around. PARDS is a good participatory league and affordable as well.
One of my sons went on to play college BB but wasn’t really trained in the PARDS league. DSHS always has a lot of talent in baseball but they never seem to use it very well.
There is really no soccer league in DS, except for the little kids. Both of my boys missed that when we moved.
We moved to DS 10 years ago and I have never regretted it. I don’t mind the growth but would love to see it slow somewhat.
As for trophies, I’ve got plenty of boxes of them in my barn collecting dust.
