I’m watching the Travel Channel this morning and on comes a show on donuts. There is a long segment on Cafe Du Monde and the beingnet. At the end of the segment the narrator says that the beingnet is so important to Louisiana that in 1986 the Legislature named it the State’s official donut.  Wow! Who says that leges don’t do anything important.

I can’t believe that we have a state donut. I wonder how many other states found it important enough to have a state donut.

I guess we are in for more of the same if the legislatures get a raise and are forced to become full time workers.

Well, if anything should be the state donut it should be the king cake, which is really just a big donut anyway.

IMHO, since it is sans hole, the beignet should be named the State’s official pastry made from deep-fried dough and sprinkled with confectioner’s sugar.

I may contact my legislator and suggest he sponsor a bill to correct this injustice.

Please do, before the funnel cake crowd starts lobbying!

Nope.  Don’t even think it.  Not the governor.  He has a job to do (God bless him and help keep him focused on governing and not on imposing his personal religious interpretations on the rest of us) while I’m just a moderate gadfly ... which in Louisiana they call “liberal.” --Faux Bobby Jindal

The funnel cake is not native to our area, and so should not be eligible to be the “Official Pastry made from deep-fried dough and sprinkled with confectioner’s sugar.” It’s an import from Pennsylvania Dutch country, and so any legislator who votes for the funnel cake over the beignet should have a recall petition filed against him/her for culinary treason.
