How does the State come up with these numbers? Moret is going to give away close to $2 million in our tax money to a Yankee company that has only 15 employees. Yet our own people struggle and are being laid off by local companies that say if they just got a little help they’d survive.

Celgene Cellular Therapeutics, which owns patented processes for harvesting stem cells from placentas for potential life-saving medical treatments, is closing its Baton Rouge facility despite the state’s offer of a $1.5 million grant and tax credits for research and job creation to keep it here.
Celgene Cellular, which is owned by the Celgene Corp., of New Jersey, leases 11,000 square feet of space in the Louisiana Technology Park on Florida Boulevard.
It employs 15 people
During the past few weeks, when Celgene’s departure appeared imminent, Moret and chamber President and Chief Executive Officer Adam Knapp held a number of meetings with Celgene about keeping the local facility.
The Economic Development Department offered “a strong retention package” that included a $1.5 million grant, potential additional research grant money, and tax credits for job creation and research, Moret said.
“We let them know we wanted to be a big part of the future for them,” Moret said.

You have to pay to have Jindal`s Gold standard. The poor Louisiana fools who are being laid off and are struggling , can still be proud they voted for Jindal.

If you are an “exotic” company you can get anything out of Jindal and Moret.
This whole economic development thing is way out of hand. Hugely out of hand.
The state should not give any private company money.
I don’t want anything for my business from the taxpayer because I am a taxpayer. I certainly would welcome tax cuts for everyone but I do not expect them just for mine.

Exactly right, what makes some companies better than other companies when some are contributing tax dollars and others are getting tax dollars?

Jindal is way over the top on this economic development thing.
The mainstream press praises his every dollar spent. If you notice he has paraded around the state announcing a million dollars here and a million dollars there that they have spent on businesses. I call it his “recovery tour”.
There is no rhyme or reason to his spending. No rhyme or reason to Moret’s salary. No rhyme or reason or even justification of when the various boards decide to take tax payer money and get into private business like the Stadium and Exposition Board did---$45 million dollars (almost 3 times the earmarks Jindal is proud to have cut) to buy privately owned commercial property in New Orleans. (Almost every member of the board was a large contributor to Jindal’s campaign and no doubt had a very early intention of making this purchase or how else did it get accomplished in such a short period??)
Jindal is a conservative fraud. Conservatives here need to speak up or lose all creditability in regards to their standing to criticize national politicians. How can we sit quietly by and criticize Pelosi or Obama as big spenders and let the ordained “fiscal conservative” up and comer Jindal get by with raping the tax payers of the state??
IMO Dept of Econ Dev should be assisting businesses in jumping through all of the regulatory hoops the gov’t puts up, not bribing them to stay in business.

That’s supposed to be part of their mission too, but their focus has always been on serving their political masters by offering up groundbreaking ceremonies where everyone gets credit and a photo op.
I know just how much maurepas loves people in BR (or anywhere in La that is not New Orleans) to lose their jobs, but I have to sour his celebration.
Accounting firm to open B.R. office
Daylight Forensic & Advisory, an international accounting firm that specializes in financial investigations and anti-money laundering consulting, is opening an office in Baton Rouge. Joseph Spinelli, Daylight’s COO, says the company is opening the local office to better serve clients in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Before, they had been handling those customers out of the firm’s Miami office. Daylight is looking at several locations in Baton Rouge, but has not picked a site. The company has one managing director for the office and is in the process of hiring additional staff.
I wonder why they did not open up this office in New Orleans. According to this company’s website, their only other offices are in New York, London, Miami, and Washington. I wonder what made them choose this “refinery town” over places like New Orleans, Houston, and Dallas.

I’ve already spoke against that. I don’t see how busting the budget was wrong for Kathleen Blanco, but somehow okay for Jindal to do. And he hasn’t exactly been such a tax cutter as he claims to be.
