I’ve known Frank Foil since before we were in law school.  He is smart, family oriented, and has the best interests of the State in his heart.  Imho, he is a potential future governor.

Although I would not have voted for the pay raise bill (any raise should be effective after the next election), his vote on this one bill doesn’t change my opinion of him.

So where do we sign the Support Foil petition or who do we contact about it?

There are times in life when you must take a stand and show people what you are really made of. He failed in this. You may say one vote does not define a man and you might be correct but one vote does show if someone is willing to take risks by going against the grain. Mr. Foil decided to go along with the rest of the people (legis) looking for a handout when clearly the state has been in disarray for a long time. Maybe he should have thought his decision through before jeopardizing his position. Surely he knows that people are hurting because of gas prices, food prices, etc. and that voting over a 200% pay raise for himself was a bad idea.

Again who do I contact for the recall petition?

I understand, JJJS, and even though we have different opinions on this issue, I applaud your interest and willingness to get involved with our government.  I wish more of our citiens would do the same.

There are 31,467 registered voters in House District 70, which means that recall petition needs the signatures of 10,384 voters.  Since only 10,208 votes were cast in that district in the last election, it might be difficult to obtain a sufficient number of signatures.  More info on recall elections here

According to this article, Daniel R. Brown is behind the effort to recall Rep. Foil.

“I started this because of the fact that Franklin Foil voted ‘yes’ for this outrageous pay raise. I just think it’s terrible,” said Daniel R. Brown, a 73-year-old retiree heading the effort against Foil.

“I’m quite upset about our governor also” for saying he won’t stop the pay raise, Brown said.

Brown said he voted for Foil and feels betrayed because his representative never sought constituent views on the pay raise before he voted on it.

According to fred, this is Foil’s response on the pay raise bill.

I think a pay raise is in order since the last raise for basic salary was 28 years ago in 1980.  If want good people to run for the job, then you have to pay a decent salary.  Additionall, we have restricted our ability to earn income in light of the recent ethics rules that we passed and applied to us immediately.  The adjusted salary since 1980 would be close to 60,000.  Unfortunately the Legislature did not have the courage to vote for any pay raise since that time, so I do not think 37,500 is an exorbianant amount to pay people you want to lead the State.

I have the ability to make good money in my legal practice, so I could easily voted no and I would be fine with the existing salary.  However, I ran on a platform that I was going to do the right thing regardless of my chances for reelection.  I think you get what you pay for and we can certainly do better with our State Legislature.  This was a difficult decision, because it would have been a very easy no vote to make, but I have no confidence that this issue would be addressed in later years.

Nevertheless, I have gotten significant legislation through this session including my bill on autism coverage for children, so I hope you will consider my service worth the pay increase.  I hope you will consider my whole record over four years before you make a decision.  I wanted to take the time to write you an individual note, because I do value your opinion, thanks.

I agree with you. I think Franklin is a great man, with all of the right qualities to become a future governor. People might be upset that he voted for the payraise, but look at what else he did this year: a great leap for all of those that have autistic children or family members. Insurance companies are now required to cover treatment for people with autiusm.

Troll, if you hear of somewhere to go to sign up to Support Foil, please let me know....I will def sign!

Thank you Trollfessor and while I think the recall will fail sometimes it is the only way to send a true message. I truly believe the voters in my district will support Mr. Foil if he just listens to the people. I voted for Mr. Foil. He seems like a very nice guy but I think he failed us (not because of the raise) but the fact that he didn’t listen to the people asking him to vote against it. I think a raise should have been given but not in the way it was done. They should have made it go into affect for the next incoming legis and it should have been more reasonable considering the other perks that his position comes with. Again I think people would have stood behind him and the other legis if they had only followed what was an obvious irritation to the people.

They wouldn’t have had the votes to go about it the right way. Those that are term-limited would have never voted for a raise that they weren’t going to get.

Well that may be the case but then you address it again and again the RIGHT way. That’s the fun about politics. Nothing is ever dead. This was the worst possible time for them to try and sneak this in like they did. No debate? I know they claim to have had closed door debates. Why weren’t we able to HEAR these debates? Shouldn’t we (as the public who voted them in) been privy to those conversations? This is why they are catching all this heat just like Jindal. Surely Mr. Foil is smart enough (for Gods sake he’s an attorney) to have understood how this would have upset everyone.

I’m not quite following you there, JJJS.  Sure there were public debates, SB 672 went through a typical history for a Senate Bill, you could have watched the debates in person or online at each one of the hearings.

what you guys are missing is Foil,Greene, etc totally IGNORED the voice of their voters !!

E-mails and calls were 150-1 AGAINST the HUGE PAY raise...a smaller version,MAYBE NOT...BE/C THEY REFUSED TO LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE THEY CLAIM TO REPRESENT When they run...Jindal faces same problem....

This is the biggest issue they have faced and ever will...it DEFINES THEM...if they are not recalled, you will see what happened in Penn. when the leg.’s do similiar thing--most will not be reelected..EVEN IF people;s anger dies down by next election....the attack ads on this issue will enrage VOTERS AGAIN
I think what enrages peole ,too, is they’re gone underground and refuse to take calls or do not return calls...say what you want and spin away---THEY ARE IN TROUBLE!

They are in trouble and the governor is in trouble and rightfully so.

The governor offered the bribe and I am sure the leges never thought it would be such a big deal as it has become since the governor supported it.

It is politically about the biggest screw up I have ever witnessed.

My mother lives on Kenilworth. She says there is a sign there today telling people not to forget that Franklin Foil voted to double his pay. Even if Jindal now vetoes the bill it might help him but he has hung his republican legislators out to dry over a pay raise bill he agreed to. They voted for it and will catch hell for it at re-election. He can blame it all on them. What a wimp.
