First Day Qualifying Report (at least for SE Louisiana)
US Senate- No candidates signed up today.
First Congressional District- Probably the biggest surprise so far, Steve Scalise will be facing a well funded Democratic opponent in Northshore businessman Jim Harlan. Harlan is probably the best Democratic candidate fielded in the First District in a very long time. However, Scalise should still win reelection because of his fundraising abilities and the fact that the First District is staunchly Republican, however his reelect percentage should be much less than what he received in May and what Bobby Jindal ever got.
Second Congressional District- The surprise (somewhat) is that Dollar Bill qualified as a Democrat. Other than that, Byron Lee, Helena Moreno, Cedric Richmond, Troy Carter, and James Carter entered the race for the Democratic nomination, with some of these candidates more serious than others.
Malik Rahim entered the race for the Green Party nomination.
No Republican lambs, I mean candidates, signed up today.
Third Congressional District- Charlie Melancon stands alone, if he’s opposed, it will be most likely be from an independent.
Sixth Congressional District- Don Cazayoux vs Bill Cassidy as Woody Jenkins saw the writing on the wall and stood aside. This will be very good news for the Republicans, but Cazayoux should still be expected to hold the seat for the reason that the consensous is that voters want to give him a chance in Washington.
Supreme Court 1- Belsome, Kuhn, and Guidry qualified today.
Public Service Commission 1- Good news for utility ratepayers, Jay Blossman will be opposed. Bad news, his opponent is John Schwegmann, who most likely will not campaign or raise or spend the serious money needed to beat Jay Blossman. Blossman should be easily reelected, pending if Suzie Terrell qualifies or not.
State Senate District 9- Polly Thomas qualified to lose this race again. This time, she will lose to Conrad Appel.
