I’m assuming this is the same poll, and the only poll, that Southern Media did in the past few months, which was taken in the week before Jindal vetoed the pay raise issue.  You would think the Picayune would have mentioned that fact.

******************

A recent statewide political poll indicated a decline in popularity for Gov. Bobby Jindal, including some sobering trends for the new governor compared with a similar survey in April. The question put to 600 registered voters in Louisiana was whether they had a favorable or unfavorable impression of Jindal. Only 7 percent had a somewhat or very unfavorable view of Jindal two months ago, but that rose to 36 percent last week, when the poll was taken by Southern Media and Opinion Research. The number of those with no response or impression was 16 percent in April. Among those in Jindal’s Republican base, the number with a very favorable impression fell from 72 percent to 35 percent. Only 3 percent of Republicans had an unfavorable impression of Jindal in April, but that number rose to 27 percent. Still, Jindal’s overall favorability, though down, is at 59 percent. The percentages were adjusted to match the state’s demographic mix.

Those are the numbers that should worry him (and bottom line).

That is the same poll that showed Mary with a higher favorability rating than Jindal.

Yes the loss of support among the base should worry him and I don’t think the veto changed it significantly. It is the base that is the most upset.

On Fox Sunday with Chris Wallace, hosted by Brit Hume this week, Bill Kristol endorsed Sarah Palin for VP for McCain instead of Jindal citing Jindal’s troubles with the pay raise. Kristol had been one of his biggest supporters. Fred Barnes was all Jindal comparing him to Obama which drew a stinging rebute from Juan Williams.

On an unscientific basis, I was talking with some four very stauch republicans I know this past week. Two of them I worked with at community gathering for Jindal. One was a host and had about 100 folks at his deal for Jindal. I suspect between the five of us Jindal got $10-15000 in contributions. Only two of the guys, not me, are regular contributors to campaigns. All had been motivated to get active for Jindal after the mess of KBB and post Katrina.

NONE would vote for Jindal if the election was today. I was amazed by this. All wished Scalise would run in 2011.  Nobody likes all the incessant campaigning and national press tours which everybody thinks are efforts by Jindal to be VP. Nobody buys into Jindal’s spin anymore. His popularity among this crew was hurt not just by his pay raise deal. They all had stories of conservations with republican elected office holders who were down on Jindal too. There are a lot of rumors out there and there a lot of bruised toes stomped by Teeple and Jindal. (Did you see any republican statewide or federal elected office holders rally to his defense when the recalls started? Republican State Representatives and State Senators are reluctant to take up for him and have told supporters stories of the session that do not paint Jindal in very good light.)

I don’t think Jindal understands how much change people expected and I think he over estimates the leeway he has to pursue his career at expense of the state.

He pursued this gig while ranking near the bottom in Congress so he now figures he can spend 4 years campaigning for his next job, getting richer and enriching his friends while the ”suckers" continue to worship his every move. cool mad
