I saw that this morning and thought, if Chancellor Jenkins were running for office, somebody would take that statement and do one of those selective quotes on it.  Perfect!!

===========

Avec le contexte:

While excessive drinking remains a major problem at college campuses in Louisiana and nationwide, alcohol education and awareness have improved at LSU in recent years, LSU officials said.

“Drinking is part of the college culture today,” interim LSU Chancellor William Jenkins said. “How can one argue with it?

“But I think we’ve made progress,” Jenkins said. “We’ve made efforts to curb binge drinking — that’s the dangerous game.”

In 2004, a Harvard University study recognized LSU’s Campus-Community Coalition for Change for helping to reduce high-risk drinking. The coalition was started after Wynne’s death.

Nope.  Don’t even think it.  Not the governor.  He has a job to do (God bless him and help keep him focused on governing and not on imposing his personal religious interpretations on the rest of us) while I’m just a moderate gadfly ... which in Louisiana they call “liberal.” --Faux Bobby Jindal

That is a pretty damm big concession for the Chancellor of a university.

Why dont they dispense free birth control because you know college kids are going to have sex

I’d guess they do.

But, when Jenkins says, “How can one argue with it?” he could mean a few different things.  Obviously he does not mean “Well we give up,” because he goes on to talk about the progress they made.  He could mean, “How does one argue with it ... let me show you how.  We have this program...” It’s not entirely clear, and you’d need a tape or more description from the writer to find out.  Are they passing out Sazerac samples at the Union?  I don’t think so.

For those underage, yes they are.

yeah ok

I dont think the issue was underage drinking anyway.  I believe it is binge drinking/debauchery period and we all know there is plenty of that including in the stadium.

When was the last time you went to a game? Because not so much anymore. Sure you can sneak in a flask and have a drink or two but if you act badly you’ll be tossed out PDQ. In fact many of the over abundance of officers have gotten a little nasty and abusive.

This goes on everywhere in Louisiana, from LSU to the Capitol, and from Funroe all the way down to Grand Isle. It is a way of life here and I think we should give it to him for being honest and not just telling the public what they want to hear.

I ll give him that.

We never had tailgating at my university.

We also never had to buy tickets to a football game either.  Admission was free with ID as it should be.

Are you sure that is happening? I don’t think so.

I sat right next to the student section at the Auburn game
How do you explain students with 1.75 liter bottles in their hands ?
Did they smuggle it in in their pants ?

Sometimes students are very inventive but I still doubt you saw someone with a half gallon. The cops would be all over them.

I have a daughter at LSU and I’ll find out. I do know she said the police have been unusually harsh the last two seasons. Not just throwing kids out of the game but arresting and beating them up as well. An acquaintance of hers won a judgment against an officer when he dislocated her elbow and broke a few ribs. ABC roams the tailgates looking for underage drinking and has even grabbed a beer out of my 24 year old sons hand while demanding an ID.

My point is that LSU and the police are much more stringent than when I went there 30 years ago.
