A loss of 60 solid jobs for the region and the State. The bleading continues.
*********
With virtually no fanfare, Oreck Corp. has moved its corporate headquarters from Harahan to Nashville, citing rising fuel costs and the good business sense of centralizing.
“Frankly, we considered relocating to China altogether, although we discarded that option,” said Tom Oreck, CEO of the vacuum manufacturing company. “Although we’ve always been connected to New Orleans, with all of the increased costs related to transportation, we wanted to have our manufacturing, our call center and our headquarters in close proximity.”
CEO Oreck said the move will see 60 people working in Nashville and the staff in Harahan reduced from 70 to 10. That Oreck—one of Jefferson Parish’s most high-profile companies—will no longer be described as Harahan-based represents a major blow to the hopes of municipal economic development officials, who have worked to retain Oreck for more than a decade, even as the Harahan location gradually hemorrhaged jobs to other locations.
“We made a big push to keep their back office here, but they decided to consolidate their operations in Tennessee,” Jefferson Parish Councilman John Young said. “Call it another casualty of Katrina.”
I am surprised they stayed around this long. When they opened the plant in Mississippi, and then moved it to Tennessee, the writing was on the wall. Some on here will blame Jindal/Moret (it would be out of character for them not to blame them), but this move is more the fault of Mike Foster and even Blanco.

Jeff Crouere this morning questioned where the Department of Economic Development was with all of this, which got a good discussion going on whether these departments are worth anything anyway. Crouere said that the excuse that Moret has only been in office for seven months won’t satisfy the public.
A caller pointed out that the Jefferson Parish Economic Development office had been working with Oreck for years to stay, but that under the new Jindal model, with everything centralized under Moret, unless Moret is interested, the locals will be kept in the dark.
From what I understand a dozen of those jobs at Oreck paid over $125,000. You can’t replace that payroll overnight.
How dare you act like Jindal should have stopped this. Jindal brought us six tax cuts and this is blanco are foster fault that we lost these jobs. Jindal only
takes credit for the good things and anything bad that happens can not be considered his job are his fault.
I would blame all the people who voted Blanco for Governor instead of Voting Jindal the first time he ran for Governor. We have the Golden child and
the gold standard now and you people still cry for more.
Long live our great Republican Governor Bobby Jindal.

Of course its Jindal’s/Moret’s fault. I would not expect anything less from you. Let’s think about this for a minute. The company opened a plant in Mississippi in 1998. Foster was governor at the time and Mike Olivier took credit for the project. Then Olivier comes to Louisiana for Blanco and after the storm, the company moves its plant, not to Louisiana, but to Tennessee. So much for Blanco’s announcment in front of their headquarters.
And it looks like this has been in the works for over a year..
Oreck’s move to Nashville has been a subject of dispute. Last summer, Oreck board member Jim Amos contradicted the company’s CEO when he admitted that the headquarters was moving in an interview with Business TN magazine.

This happend whild Jindal is Governor not Blanco. Jindal got the governorship because of Katrina, so dare me all you want… I personally support Foster Cambell.

You are nit picking to point out this happened while Jindal was governor, when we all know Blanco are foster must have caused this. Now Jindal gave us
six tax cuts in just six months and people tried to give that credit to blanco, so it must be blanco fault that this happened.
Quit crying and give our great republican governor 2 to 6 years to get things going in the right direction.
I don’t we should have been throwing money at Oreck but I bet if Oreck said he was a steel mill that had a vacuum cleaner business on the side Bobby and Steve would have built them a new plant.

If Oreck was not smart enough to donate money to Jindal, they should not expect to be in line for the gravy from Jindal becoming Governor.
Jindal is very smart in the fact he has starting hunting companies who will be loyal to the king and letting the foolish companies do or die on their own.
He has brought about the gold standard and most of his voters will remain loyal to him in hopes of one day the king will spend money in their area.
The funny thing is the democrats are looking like conservatives , compared to Governor Jindal.
Live long King Jindal and give Louisiana voters everything they voted for.
DM, irony and sarcasm losses their punch when you overdo it.
Now DM sounds senile and bitter. I think he was a Blanco staffer who lost his job when Jindal took over. Or he is just nuts like IB, or both.
Why is supporting Jindal wrong and how would that make me a blanco staffer ? Just because you are nuts does not make everyone else who fully supports Jindal
a nut.
Love live the great republican governor, who knows which companies to give big money to and which ones to let go .
