I had heard a lot about this problem but now I have experienced it first hand. My niece goes to Tulane and she is graduating in December. She told me that only about ten percent of her classmates are going to live in LA and all of them are staying in New Orleans. It looks like our young professionals have few options here.
If this keeps up we will soon be a state of scalawags and dopeheads.

Last year, we had a chance to go in a new direction under a new kind of governor, but a majority chose to keep the status quo. One day, if the parades and distractions don’t get in the way, a majority will wake up and cut the past free. Then again, there’s always Orleans parish.

I’m not sure how “bad” to view that as, because Tulane gets a large number of out of state students (and, of course, NO natives) to begin with. Any idea what percent in niece’s class are from LA?

Of last year’s freshman class at Tulane, just 14.18 percent were from Louisiana.

Nice try Clay, but I’m a tulane alum, and let me tell you the vast majority are from New York, CA, Florida, and Texas. They come down here so there parents can buy their degress and they get a four year (or longer) vacation out of the deal. The Tulane kids leaving the state is a good thing; we want inteligent people to replace the natives we are losing not the crop of spoiled rotten rich kids that come to take advantage of New Orleans’ liberal party scene.

You can’t give this a rest? It was weird little bureaucrat vs. plodding experienced lady, not at all a clear “whole new direction.” Maybe he will go off to Congress and learn some people skills along the way.

[QUOTE=Morning Breath]Oh, and go to http://www.census.gov/prod/2003pubs/censr-7.pdf, and if you don’t feel like reading the numbers scroll to page 5- it shows how LA was the worst southern state for outmigration from 1995-2000; in fact all others showed some gains (including all states surrounding us), with the Southeast experiencing very fast migration growth.

Got two smart kids, one of which has a MBA and the other a BA and neither could find a decent job in LA. Both now live in Texas and have had jobs (one is now a mother and a stay at home) that could not even have been imagined in LA.
We are in REAL trouble in this state. We are losing our best and brightest and there is no help in sight.
I’m glad I’m about to retire and continue to enjoy that great Louisiana benefit - the “homestead exemption”. That means that I won’t have to contribute very much to our local schools and most people won’t pay anything at all - so why should anyone care (and most don’t) what our school board does with the tax money that rental property owners, small business, local industry, etc. pays to “educate” our children? Hey, “the people” get a free ride and those evil rich people and corporations pay the bill! Huey Long and populism still lives.

I bet your kids are real. So smart that you are too humble to even tells us the prestigious universitites they attended. Let me guess. Sudern? Gambling? University of Slow Learners (now known as ULL)?

Homestead exemption is a problem, but don’t think, regarding the renters, that they aren’t paying their share. We landlords keep track of all the expenses, maintenance, repair, mortgage if any, insurance, all the others, AND taxes, and need to cover that and any profit out of the rent. So, renters pay their way.

Look, the poster could say Harvard or Princeton or Stanford, what’s it to you? This rudeness and elitism are part of the problem.
